Shining Light on Your Chicago In-Home Cat Photography Session

As a Chicago cat photographer, I design each session around the most important “prop” in your home – the light. Natural light shapes the mood of every image: soft and calm, bright and playful, or cozy and intimate. Understanding how light moves through your space helps create portraits that feel like your cat and your home.
Window exposure
North or south facing windows are ideal because they usually provide flattering light that is soft and consistent for most of the day, with fewer harsh shadows. These windows are perfect for relaxed portraits on the bed, sofa, or a favorite perch, where your cat can simply be themself.
For east facing windows, morning light provides a gentle glow that feels quiet and peaceful, like the first stretch of the day. West facing windows shine in late afternoon and early evening, wrapping your cat in warm, golden tones that are especially lovely on fur.
If your home has a mix of window directions, that is even better. Different rooms may “come alive” with light at different times, giving us a variety of looks—bright and airy in one space, warm and dramatic in another—all without ever leaving your home.
Seasonal light
In addition to window exposure, light behaves differently at different times of the year. In summer, the sun is higher and can create strong, bright patches on the floor and furniture. Those sun puddles are perfect for capturing cats napping, stretching, and rolling in their favorite warm spots, but direct light can also create harsh shadows.
To keep your cat beautifully lit, I bring a small pop‑up diffuser and thin curtain material to soften direct light when needed. A tiny adjustment—moving your cat a bit farther from the window or gently filtering the sun—can turn harsh light into a soft, flattering glow.
In winter, especially here in Chicago, we often see more overcast days. The upside is that cloudy skies act like a giant softbox, giving us gentle, even light. The trade‑off is that our window of usable light is smaller because of shorter days, so timing becomes more important. Together, we will choose a session time that makes the most of the light your home naturally receives.
Your light assignment
After booking your session, I’m giving you a bit of homework (I’m a teacher, after all!) This simple assignment helps us plan for the most beautiful, cat‑friendly light in your home:
- Walk through your home at different times of day and notice where the light naturally falls, especially with curtains and shades open.
- Jot down the times when each spot is at its brightest, even roughly (for example, “living room couch: 9–11 a.m.” or “bedroom window: late afternoon”).
- Pay special attention to your cat’s favorite chill spots—floors, sofas, beds, chairs, window perches, cat trees, even that one cardboard box they refuse to give up.
By the time session day arrives, you will know exactly where and when your home feels the brightest and coziest. Your cat gets to hang out in their favorite places, and together we use the light you already love to create images you will treasure.
